Italy 2010

My Ten Weeks in Italy

  1. I left this also on your other blog before I noticed the date of that post was 2010 and you might not check it anymore. I found your blog by a comment you left on a Freshly Pressed post about Lucera. What a great find. Your pics here are amazing. I found it refreshing to read how well you seemed to take the travel mishaps in stride. Delays, missed connections, and lost luggage send most people into a blathering rage. How nice that you just dealt with it and made the best of the situation. My husband and I are traveling to Italy for the first time later this year for our 20th anniversary. I am so excited about the trip. I’ve been on the look out for any posts about Italy and this one is truly a treasure. Thanks for posting.

    • Hi Stephanie, I got email notification of your comments on my Italy 2010 blog, so no worries there! It’s easy to get stressed if things go wrong when you have a very tight itinerary, but we travelled with no itinerary other than booking for language schools. Our original idea for the second 5 weeks of a ten week trip was to go to Puglia and Sicily. We had no reservations for hotels or trains so we looked at the weather predictions for the first week and decided to go to Sicily first. Well, it was definitely not a place that cold be rushed and in the end we did not get to Puglia. In Sicily we arrived by bus or train to a place then looked at where the good onward connections were to. We had just a rough plan of our top 5 thing we wanted to see in Sicily and anything else was a bonus.

Travelling off season has it’s benefits. You don’t need to pre-book anything in smaller towns particularly, people are happy to have customers and often offer up to 60% discounts on the summer price.

I hope you have a wonderful trip to Italy and get off the beaten track and just explore. Pack an open mind and if possible, an open itinerary.
